When is something that's offensive in the U.S. okay in other countries? Is Harry being hypotrical for his actions on MADTV?
This question was asked recently in one of my social network groups. My reply - "Thanks for asking the question - it's important to keep asking the question. I believe that since we're a "global community", each one of us, no matter where we live is responsible for stopping the destructive behaviors or comments that reduce others to a stereotype. Mr. Connick was taking a stand, as a "global citizen" that this is not acceptable anywhere, anytime. My experience is that whether the person's intent is "just for fun" or "for real", this is how stereotypes are perpetuated. I know that we are all so much more than our stereotypes.
If I were to believe that Mr. Connick's behavior was hypocritical, then I would believe that people cannot grow and mature in their attitudes and belief systems. I strongly believe that people can and do change over time. Mostly, the media wants viewers to believe this doesn't happen - and of course it creates sensational news with higher ratings
I believe Mr. Connick did the right thing."
